
Karen Flowers
Director of Scholastic Journalism Organizations

Karen Flowers is director of the South
Carolina Scholastic Press Association (SCSPA) and of the Southern
Interscholastic Press Association (SIPA), the state and regional
scholastic media organizations with headquarters in the College.
She also directs the Carolina
Journalism Institute, a summer workshop for advisers and students
who work with middle and high school publications throughout the
Southeast.
Flowers is also active in national scholastic journalism organizations.
She is chair of the Teaching Standards Committee of the Scholastic
Journalism Division of AEJMC and is state director of the Journalism
Education Association.
Flowers came to the College in 2000 to direct the PRO (Professionals
Reaching Out) program, a partnership between the then College of
Journalism and Mass Communications and the S.C. Press Association.
When the program ended in May 2002, Flowers became the assistant
director of scholastic journalism and assumed the directorship of
SCSPA July 1, 2002.
Flowers spent 30 years in the public high school classroom, 28 of
which were spent teaching journalism and advising high school newspapers.
Flowers has received numerous honors and awards from local, regional
and national organizations: the Pioneer Award from the National Scholastic
Press Association, the Distinguished Adviser and the Special Recognition
awards from the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund, the Columbia Scholastic
Press Association's Gold Key, the Reid Montgomery S.C. Adviser of
the Year, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Journalism
Education Association.
She received an Excellence in Teaching Award from the USC Alpha
Chapter of Mortar Board in 2003. |
