
Jim Haney

Advertising and Public Relations Sequence
Jim Haney has extensive experience as a writer, editor and manager
in the mass media field. He is a former newspaper editor, corporate
communications specialist and public relations practitioner.
A graduate of the School of Journalism and Mass Communications,
Haney joined the faculty full time in 2004 after having served as
an adjunct faculty member numerous times beginning in 1977. He teaches
introductory and advanced writing for the mass media and has taught
introductory news writing and in the news-editorial practicum.
He was awarded an Excellence in Teaching Award by USC's Mortar Board
honor society in 2006 and again in 2011.
Haney worked for 22 years with daily newspapers in North and South
Carolina, including The Columbia Record, The State and The Item of
Sumter, holding a variety of positions from reporter to managing
editor and editor. He won awards for investigative reporting and
editorial writing, was president of the South Carolina AP News Council
and was a member of the Executive Committee of the South Carolina
Press Association.
He later worked in public relations for Chernoff Newman of Columbia,
primarily representing clients in the fiber optic technology sector.
Before joining Chernoff Newman, he worked in corporate and marketing
communications with Union Switch & Signal of Pittsburgh. |
