Dr. Andrea Tanner is an associate professor in the School of Journalism
and Mass Communications. Dr. Tanner’s primary research focus
is health communication, in particular, how media present health
information and how mass communication can be used to promote changes
in health behavior. Her other research interests include television
news and journalism education. Tanner currently serves as the Director
of the Science
and Health Communication Research Group at the University of
South Carolina. She is also an active member of AEJMC’s Science
Communication Interest Group, serving as the group’s chair
from 2007-2008.
A former television news reporter, anchor and producer, Tanner teaches
courses focusing on broadcast news writing and advanced television
news producing and reporting. She has co-directed the school’s "Carolina
News" television program, a daily newscast that is seen on cable
channels throughout the city of Columbia. She also teaches in the
School of Journalism and Mass Communication graduate program and
the University of South Carolina Honors College.
A native of Savannah, Georgia, Tanner enjoys spending time with
her husband, Ben, and two children, Kati and Benjamin. Her hobbies
include running, aerobics and tennis.
