Ph.D., Michigan State University

Dr. Varouhakis joined the School of Journalism and Mass Communications in 2009 as a Visiting Assistant Professor. Varouhakis has taught undergraduate journalism writing and research methods courses, while in the spring of 2010 he launched a new course focusing on reporting on the military. This year, among others, he will be teaching public affairs reporting and in the spring he will offer again the Media and the Military course.

Varouhakis is a media professional with a seven-year successful career in an international media environment, while as an academic he has several professional and peer-reviewed publications.

As a news media professional he worked as a foreign correspondent for The Associated Press, covering among other things the Iraq War (embedded 2003), the security of the 2004 Olympic Games, and international politics such as the presidency of the European Union, the regional World Economic Forum and much more. His articles, many of them breaking stories and exclusives, were published in major market newspapers in Europe and the U.S. He also worked as a staff reporter and assistant editor for a daily English language newspaper in Greece, covering defense, foreign affairs and human rights, while foreign assignments include travel to Washington D.C. and Switzerland. The newspaper, Kathimerini English Edition, was published jointly by the Greece’s leading daily Kathimerini and the International Herald Tribune for Greece and Cyprus.

In the academic field his studies employ both qualitative and quantitative research techniques. His research interests include the use of the Internet, newspaper coverage of local news, news coverage of religion nationally and internationally, governmental influences on news media content, and studies in security and intelligence. His publications appeared in Newspaper Research Journal, Web Journal for Mass Communication Research, Studies in Intelligence, and the International Journal of Intelligence & Counterintelligence.

Varouhakis has done extensive work in the area of human rights, especially with victims of torture. After conducting dozens of interviews with torture victims from around the world he developed a field guide and manual for interviewing victims of torture. The manual has been published online by the Victims & the Media Program at the School of Journalism at Michigan State University.
